Job Summary
BMP Testing and Calibration Services Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to support our materials testing and calibration operations. This role is ideal for candidates interested in materials science, mechanical testing, quality control, or laboratory operations. The Laboratory Assistant will work closely with senior technicians and engineers to prepare samples, operate laboratory equipment, record data, and maintain laboratory organization and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with mechanical and materials testing, including hardness testing (Vickers, Rockwell, etc.)
- Prepare test samples through cutting, mounting, grinding, and polishing
- Support microscopy and optical measurements, including basic image capture and documentation
- Assist in calibration activities for laboratory instruments under supervision
- Accurately record test data, measurements, and observations in lab records
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness, safety, and organization
- Handle test specimens, tools, and equipment with care and professionalism
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality guidelines
- Support senior staff with project setup, testing workflows, and reporting tasks
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree or coursework in engineering, materials science, or related field preferred)
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn laboratory procedures
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, or similar
- Ability to follow written and verbal technical instructions
- Comfortable working in a laboratory or industrial environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a materials, metallurgical, or testing laboratory
- Familiarity with hardness testing, microscopy, or dimensional measurement
- Exposure to quality systems, calibration, or testing standards (ASTM, ISO, etc.)
- Students or recent graduates in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift and handle samples and fixtures (up to ~30 lbs)
- Comfortable working with laboratory tools and precision equipment
